Book a ConsultationWhat the test measures
- 01
Maximal oxygen uptake
The test directly measures the maximum oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. This value is the gold standard for aerobic capacity, reflecting how efficiently your cardiovascular and respiratory systems deliver oxygen to working muscles at peak exertion. As an oxygen consumption test it measures rather than estimates.
- 02
Cardiovascular fitness
Because the number depends on heart, lungs and blood vessels working together, it doubles as a cardiovascular fitness test. Higher scores generally correlate with stronger cardiovascular function and better long-term heart health, which is why it appears in cardiovascular health assessment as often as in sport.
- 03
Endurance capacity
People with a higher result can sustain harder work for longer. Endurance testing of this kind is how athletes monitor stamina and track progress across a training block, and how anyone else finds out whether their conditioning is actually improving.
- 04
Training zones
AIWO's clinicians will walk you through the results and use them to set individual heart rate and pace zones. That turns a VO2 max assessment into a training prescription instead of a number to quote.
Preparing for the test: what to do
Rest properly beforehand. Avoid exercise in the twenty-four hours before your VO2 max exercise test, keep the previous day's intensity moderate, and treat it as a body conditioning session rather than a hard one.
Exercise carries inherent risk, so complete AIWO's health screen before the day to avoid a postponement or cancellation on arrival.
- Maintain your normal medication, delaying a dose only if it is safe to do so
- Bring your inhaler if you have exercise-induced asthma
- Seek advice from your GP if you have concerns about testing
- If you have a metabolic disorder such as thyroid disease or diabetes, take quickly absorbed carbohydrate immediately after the test to avoid hypoglycaemia following the fasted period
Preparing for the test: what not to do
Do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least four hours before the test, chewing gum included, as contamination can force the appointment to be rebooked.
If you over-train the day before, your body will be fatigued and you will not get the full benefit of the assessment.
- Do not train high-intensity cardio in the twenty-four hours beforehand
- If lifting weights, do not train your legs
- Do not go to the gym on the morning of the appointment
What happens on the day
Arrive fifteen minutes before your appointment at AIWO's facility in Chennai. You exercise on a treadmill or bike while wearing a mask that captures your exhaled air, and the workload increases in stages until you reach your limit. The whole exercise physiology testing protocol usually runs under half an hour.
The effort is genuinely hard at the end, which is the point: the plateau in oxygen uptake is what defines the result. Staff monitor you throughout, and the exercise performance test stops immediately if anything looks wrong.
Who books it
VO2 max testing draws two very different groups, and AIWO reads the result differently for each.
- Runners, cyclists and triathletes who want athletic performance testing before a season or race build
- Team-sport players using sports performance diagnostics to benchmark conditioning
- People interested in VO2 max for health and longevity rather than competition, since aerobic capacity tracks strongly with long-term outcomes
- Anyone wanting a cardio fitness assessment before starting serious training after a long gap
- People adding a fitness assessment Chennai visit to a wider health review, including VO2 max for athletes preparing abroad
What you get back
Your report gives the measured value in millilitres per kilogram per minute, your ventilatory thresholds, heart rate at each stage and how you compare with reference ranges for your age and sex. It is a full cardiorespiratory fitness test record, not a single headline figure.
AIWO's doctor talks it through with you and can build training zones from it. Repeating an aerobic fitness test after a block of training shows whether the work paid off, and pairs well with metabolic fitness measures such as resting metabolic rate.
Booking through Zen Vitals
The equipment, the physiologists and the doctors are AIWO's. Zen Vitals books the slot, coordinates the health screen beforehand and saves you an average of 10% against booking AIWO direct. We speak to you first so the test is scheduled when you are rested enough for it to count.
